1° Luglio 2026: Celebrazione del 50° anniversario dell'Italian Heritage and Culture Committee of New York Inc. e dei 250 anni di contributo italiano e italo-americano all'America

 

NEW YORK - L'Italian Heritage and Culture Committee of New York, Inc. (IHCC-NY) annuncia con orgoglio

un traguardo storico: 50 anni dedicati alla promozione del patrimonio, della cultura e della lingua italiana.

Joseph Sciame, Presidente dell'IHCC-NY negli ultimi 20 anni e membro del comitato fondatore del 1976, ha

commentato questa speciale celebrazione del cinquantenario: "Io e il Consiglio di Amministrazione

dell'IHCC-NY siamo orgogliosi di aver fatto conoscere al pubblico americano, così come alla scena

internazionale, i risultati raggiunti da molti italiani e italo-americani nel corso di oltre cinque decenni,

attraverso le nostre celebrazioni tematiche, i poster, i segnalibri, gli opuscoli, l'annuario commemorativo e il

calendario degli eventi per l'area 'Tri-State'. Nelle nostre cerimonie, negli eventi e nel concorso di saggistica

per studenti, abbiamo messo in luce gli straordinari traguardi storici di tanti italiani e italo-americani –

inclusi coloro che sono emigrati nelle Americhe e nel resto del mondo – valorizzandone la creatività e

l'intelligenza in svariati ambiti". 

In linea con il tema delle celebrazioni, il1° luglio 2026 il prestigioso premio annuale "Leonardo da Vinci"

dell'IHCC-NY verrà conferito alla memoria dello scultore e immigrato italiano Luigi Del Bianco, capo scultore

del Mount Rushmore National Memorial – che raffigura le maestose effigi di Washington, Jefferson, T.

Roosevelt e Lincoln nelle Black Hills del South Dakota. A ritirare il premio sarà Lou Del Bianco, nipote di

Luigi, nonché autore, attore e musicista.

Tutto ebbe inizio nella primavera del 1976 con la "Settimana della Cultura Italiana" (17-23 maggio),

promossa dal Dipartimento dell'Istruzione di New York (Board of Education) come iniziativa cittadina volta a

incentivare lo studio della lingua italiana nelle scuole pubbliche. Leo Bernardo, Direttore dell'Ufficio Lingue

Straniere di New York, Steven Aiello, Presidente del Board of Education, e Rosamarie Riccio Pietanza,

Presidente della New York Italian Teachers Association, concordarono sul fatto che una Settimana della

Cultura Italiana avrebbe messo in risalto l'importanza della lingua italiana. Il Dott. Angelo Gimondo,

Direttore del programma di educazione bilingue, ne divenne il primo presidente, carica che ricoprì fino al

dicembre 2006, mentre la Sig.ra Pietanza assunse il ruolo di prima coordinatrice del programma. Il primo

manifesto fu realizzato da uno studente di lingua italiana. Il sindaco Abraham Beame presentò la prima

proclamazione ufficiale presso il Municipio, rendendo omaggio al ristretto gruppo di educatori e

amministratori che avevano reso possibile la realizzazione della proposta iniziale. All'evento seguì un

ricevimento presso il Consolato d'Italia. 

Nel 1985, le celebrazioni furono spostate al mese di ottobre per coincidere con gli eventi del Columbus

Day, trasformandosi nel "Mese del Patrimonio e della Cultura Italiana" (Italian Heritage and

Culture Month). Le proclamazioni annuali si estesero fino a includere quelle dei Presidenti dei distretti

cittadini (Borough Presidents), del Consiglio Comunale, del Sindaco di New York, del Governatore dello

Stato di New York e del Presidente degli Stati Uniti, a riconoscimento del contributo offerto dagli italiani e

dagli italoamericani. 

Il Consiglio Direttivo dell'IHCC-NY continua a essere composto da eminenti rappresentanti della comunità

italiana e italoamericana di New York, alcuni dei quali erano presenti già nel 1976. L'IHCC-NY amplia

costantemente il proprio raggio d'azione, collaborando con il Consolato d'Italia a New York, l'Istituto

Italiano di Cultura di New York, la Columbus Citizens Foundation, il John D. Calandra Italian American

Institute, l’Italian American Teachers Association, l'Italian American Committee on Education, la NIAF,

l'Italian American Museum e altre realtà. Anche altri Stati hanno iniziato a seguire l'esempio dell'IHCC-NY. 

Un contributo significativo alla promozione, alla valorizzazione e alla salvaguardia del patrimonio, della

cultura e della lingua italiana. Un contributo significativo alla cultura e alla storia americana. Quale eredità

straordinaria! 1976: L'IHCC-NY, Inc. nasce durante le celebrazioni del Bicentenario dell'Indipendenza

americana. 2026: L'Italian Heritage and Culture Committee of New York celebra il suo Giubileo d'Oro, in

concomitanza con il 250 anniversario dell'indipendenza degli Stati Uniti d'America.

2026: Celebrating the 50 th Anniversary of the Italian Heritage and Culture Committee of N.Y. Inc

and the Italian and Italian American Contribution to America for 250 years

Italian Heritage and Culture Committee of New York, Inc. (IHCC-NY) proudly announces its historical milestone: 50

years of promoting Italian heritage, culture, and language. Joseph Sciame, President/Chair of the IHCC-NY for the

past 20 years and inaugural member of the 1976 founding committee, commented on this special 50th year

anniversary celebration. “I and the IHCC-NY Board of Directors can take pride that for over five decades we have

brought to the American public, as well as the international scene, the achievements of many Italian and Italian

Americans through our thematic celebrations, posters, bookmarks, brochures, annual commemorative booklet and

its Tri-State Program Calendar. In our ceremonies, events, and student essay contest, we have evidenced the

outstanding historic achievements of many Italians and Italian Americans, of those who migrated to the Americas

and throughout the world, highlighting their creativity and intelligence in so many fields.”

In keeping with the celebration theme, on July 1,2026, the IHCC-NY’s singular, annual Leonardo Da Vinci award will

be presented posthumously to the Italian immigrant sculptor Luigi Del Bianco, the chief stone carver of the Mount

Rushmore National Memorial, depicting the majestic figures of Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt, and Lincoln, in

the Black Hills of South Dakota. Lou Del Bianco, Luigi’s grandson, author, actor, and musician, will be accepting the

award.

It all began in the spring of 1976 as Italian Culture Week, May 17-23, under the auspices of the New York City Board

of Education, as a citywide initiative to promote the study of Italian language in public schools. Leo Bernardo,

Director of the New York City Bureau of Foreign Languages, Steven Aiello, President of the Board of Education, and

Rosamarie Riccio Pietanza, President of the New York Italian Teachers Association, agreed that an Italian Culture

Week would highlight the importance of the Italian language. Dr. Angelo Gimondo, Director of Bilingual Education,

became its first chairman, and later president, until December 2006. Ms. Pietanza, became its first program

coordinator. The first poster was designed by an Italian language student. Mayor Abraham Beame, presented the

first Proclamation at City Hall as he recognized the small group of educators and administrators, who were

instrumental in making the initial proposal a reality. That event was followed by a reception at the Italian Consulate.

In 1985, the celebrations moved to October, to coincide with Columbus Day events, becoming Italian Heritage and

Culture Month. The annual Proclamations expanded to include those of the Borough Presidents, City Council, New

York City Mayor, New York Governor, and the President of the United States in recognition of the contribution of

Italians and Italian Americans.

The IHCC-NY Board continues to be comprised of eminent representatives of New York’s Italian and Italian American

community, some of whom were there in 1976. The IHCC-NY ever expands its scope, collaborating with the Italian

Consulate in New York, the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, Columbus Citizen’s Foundation, John D. Calandra

Italian American Institute, Italian American Teacher’s Association, Italian American Committee on Education, NIAF,

the Italian American Museum, among others. Other states began to mirror IHCC-NY’s example.

What a significant contribution to promoting, presenting, and preserving Italian heritage, culture, and language.

1976: IHCC-NY, Inc. began during the Bicentennial Celebrations of America’s Independence. 2026: Italian Heritage

and Culture Committee of New York’s celebrates its Golden Jubilee, coinciding with the 250th Anniversary of the

Independence of the United States of America.
