My heart harbours a pulse

that had experienced joy before I did.

Once in rain, it wandered through a grove,

and forgot – unintentionally – how to return.

Whenever I think of reclaiming it,

a gentle breeze wafts to me

from the thick intertwined limbs,

telling me of a shade that had become

a tent of rest,

and of velvety wingbeats

of cooing doves filling the sky

in all mornings.

In my chest now, a hollow

runs unseen within the desolate part.

I place my hand upon my pocket,

groping for a cactus growing beneath–

though I find nothing

save stillness, asleep,

snoring in the deep recesses,

murmuring of rain

that has dried on high

for more than a season.

Perhaps the heart,

when it grows weary of verdancy,

returns–leaving space enough

for all this silence.

Il mio cuore custodisce un battito

che aveva conosciuto la gioia prima di me.

Una volta, nella pioggia, vagò attraverso un boschetto

e dimenticò, senza volerlo, come tornare.

Ogni volta che penso di riprenderlo,

una brezza gentile mi giunge dai rami fitti e intrecciati,

raccontandomi di un’ombra divenuta tenda di riposo,

e di morbidi battiti d’ali

di colombe tubanti che riempivano il cielo

in tutte le mattine.

Ora, nel mio petto, un vuoto

scorre invisibile nella parte desolata.

Poso la mano sulla tasca,

cercando a tentoni un cactus che cresce sotto ma non trovo nulla se non immobilità, addormentata,

che russa nei recessi profondi,

mormorando di una pioggia

che si è asciugata in alto

da più di una stagione.

Forse il cuore,

quando si stanca del verde,

ritorna lasciando spazio sufficiente

a tutto questo silenzio.
